PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania — Two people have died following a catastrophic five-vehicle collision near the Fort Duquesne Bridge that caused an SUV to leave an elevated ramp and fall onto Reedsdale Street below, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety officials. The crash occurred shortly after 3 p.m. during a heavy traffic period, leading to significant road closures and widespread disruption across the North Side.
Authorities reported that the incident took place near the southbound Route 65 ramp leading into downtown Pittsburgh via the Fort Duquesne Bridge. The collision involved five vehicles and escalated into a severe emergency when an SUV overturned and went over the edge of the ramp. The vehicle landed on Reedsdale Street near Acrisure Stadium, scattering debris and bringing traffic in the surrounding area to a standstill.
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, where they found extensive damage across both the elevated roadway and the street below. The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead as a result of the crash. A second occupant was trapped inside the wreckage and required extrication using specialized rescue tools before being transported to a hospital in critical condition. Despite medical intervention, the passenger later died from their injuries, according to officials. The identities of both victims have not yet been released.
No additional injuries were reported among the occupants of the other vehicles involved in the collision.
